I am a foodie. I love food. Fast food, gourmet food, raw food (I love cookie dough, okay? And fresh fruit and vegetables.), American food, international food. If I knew I only had one day left to live, here’s what I’d like to eat on that last day.

Breakfast:
Diet Coke from a can. There used to be a place called Rise and Dine in Addison. I’d want their French Toast. It’s coated in granola, brown sugar and coconut. Heavenly. Give me a side of bacon. Real, thick bacon, and a bowl of fresh fruit, too. Just no honey dew melon. Yuck.

Snack: Diet Coke. Chicken Minis from Chick-fil-A. Oh, yeah.

Lunch: Chicken with broccoli in brown sauce at Jasmine Uniquely Chinese in Addison. Or maybe I’d make my amazing Yankee Pot Pie. It’s like chicken pot pie, but with cheesy mashed potatoes on top. Sooo good.

Snack: Tex-Mex! Bring on the tamales and enchiladas. Give me chips and salsa! I want flan! And a Diet Coke from Sonic. Or perhaps a broccoli cheese stuffed spud from The Black Eyed Pea.

Dinner: If on this last day I were to have no jaw pain, and my jaw were to function normally, I’d ask my mom or dad to grill me a steak, medium rare. Maybe if Steak and Ale were still in business, I’d have salad from there. Otherwise, I’d want to go to Luby’s for fried fish with tartar sauce, fried okra, fruit salad and broccoli with cheese sauce. (By the way, my mother took me out for this Luby’s meal recently. I am leaving the South after all!) For dessert I’d make myself chocolate cake from scratch and 7 Minute Frosting. No, wait! Creme brulee! And of course DIET COKE!

Late night snack: Fries and ketchup from Whataburger.

That’s a lot of food. Maybe I’d better know two or three days before I die! So what would you eat if you had one day left?

The first time I met my friend Maegan was when she came over to help us move. Her husband was one of David’s co-workers who offered to help us move. Not only did this woman who had never met me come help us move, but she brought donuts!

That’s how great friendships begin. With food.

The next time we got together, Maegan invited me to meet her for a pedicure. That is another way great friendships begin. I was about an hour late to the salon. As it so often happens when people give me directions that include words like “north” or “west” I got lost. Maegan was very patient with me over the cell phone, redirecting me multiple times. Now she gives me directions that include words like “left” and “past the mailboxes”.

I could not believe how long we spent chatting. After they kicked us out of the salon we walked into Corner Bakery in our foam flip flops and talked some more over panninis.

Nowadays, David knows that if I say I’m just dropping something off at Maegan’s it’s going to take three hours. If we go out to lunch, it will take eight. We swap books and magazines and recipes. She’s the one I call (or text) when I need to know if it’s still cool to tuck your jeans into your boots.

David and I watched Maegan’s dog, Zeus, while Maegan and her husband were out of town for Christmas.

She’s the kind of friend that says, “Oh, your blender broke? Don’t buy a new one! Come get mine. I never use it.”

As I wrote this post, I realized that for all our crazy adventures, I didn’t have a single picture of her or with her! So, Thursday we’re going to take pictures. I told her if one of us were to die, we’d have no proof that we were friends. In fact, if she dies before Thursday, I told her I’d go to the funeral parlor, lie down next to her and have David snap a picture. I’ll just tell people she blinked.

David and I went to Luby’s for lunch after church on Sunday. He told me I should blog about it. So, here’s the Luby’s post, by request.

Luby’s always makes me think of my grandparents. They loved the cafeteria and Denny’s. My mother has a full set of Christmas goblets that my grandparents got from Denny’s on one of those free glass with a meal deals.

There aren’t many cafeterias left around here, but there is one near our house.
My brothers were delighted to find out about this. Brother #1 always orders chopped steak. Brother #2 orders liver and onions. We were strange children.

Luby’s is the only restaurant where I will order fried fish. I suggested we eat there so that David could order healthy vegetables.

Since David is not quite so familiar with the magic of Luby’s, I told him he should order the chopped steak like Brother #1. Well, Brother #1, you’d better tell us how you order it, cause what they served David looked nothing like what you get. His came slathered in cheese and chives. So much for the “healthy” idea.

Luby’s feeds my OCD. They put everything on separate plates. Nothing touches. They ask and never assume you want tartar sauce!

My broccoli was perfect. And the okra! Oh, blissful, Sourthern delight!

Have I mentioned I really enjoy food? Would you like for me to describe all my meals? I can. In minute detail. I think I missed my calling as a food critic.
