Then Sings My Soul Book Review

21 Nov

Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan tells the stories behind 150 popular Christian hymns. Mr. Morgan writes about the songwriters, sharing the hardships they faced and how they came to faith in Christ. Reading the stories also gives the reader a lesson in church history, with some hymns dating back to eighth century, A.D. Each story is accompanied by the music and lyrics to its corresponding hymn.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in quite some time. Reading the heartbreaking story behind Now Thank We All Our God so close to Thanksgiving was very timely, and makes me feel ashamed for not giving thanks more often. Another hymn of Thanksgiving, We Gather Together, had a surprising story behind it. It was written in 1597 to celebrate Holland’s freedom from Spain. There were so many hymns written during times of religious persecution. It was truly inspiring to read of the faith of Christian brothers and sisters.

My favorite hymn, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing was written in 1758 in England, by Robert Robinson for his sermon on Pentecost Sunday. Just as I am was written by a woman with a chronic illness. I think you get more out of songs when you know a little bit of history like that.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It would make an excellent Christmas gift for pastors, music ministers, musicians and Christians in general.

I love these types of books. Mike had one like this in the 1980s when he was teaching the young married class. I am difinately going to get this book!

In church each Sunday our worship leader tells us the story behind one of the hymns we sing that day. I love that part of the service! I might have to add this book to my wish list. (And Come, Thou Fount is one of my favorites, too!)

I was given this book for Christmas a year ago, and my daughter and I read through it before we’d start our school day, and we’d sing the hymn together. It was such a sweet time. So glad to see you enjoyed the book, too.

I’m currently reading another book by Robert Morgan (thanks to BookSneeze)called “On This Day in Christian History.” It’s been really good so far, too.

Hii, my name is Kari. I am so glad I came upon your site; it is so helpful for so many persons. This book looks great and I am already looking for a copy. I praise the Lord that He has given inspiration to people through writing as they are so encouraging to those who walk with the Lord. I have written a book called Born Again and am still praying it gets traditionally published. I just started a blog at kariathome.wordpress.com if your interested in checking it out. I just started staying home full time as I am carrying my husband and I’s first child. It is a grand experience, filled with questions and concerns! So I thought to share with others what I learn when I learn them. My passion has always been the home; so sharing it should be fun. Well hope to hear from you; bye for now and peace to you from our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ :) – Kari
