Books

Here are some reviews of books I’ve recently read.
A Thousand Tomorrows by Karen Kingsbury – A nice read for people with chronic illness, because so few stories feature young people with a chronic illness. There were some cheesy love lines, and it was predictable, but the picture of sacrificial love was beautiful. It reminded me of A Walk to Remember.
The Wedding Machine by Beth Webb Hart – Ms. Hart doesn’t seem to believe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a real illness. That knocks this book down a peg or two for me right away. Also, I just didn’t like the way it was written…”As Ray drives across the bridge…” Maybe it’s because we’re in a recession, but I just don’t get how women who wear their mother’s hand me downs and drive forty year old cars can afford to give $600 wedding presents from Tiffany’s.
Against Medical Advice by James Patterson and Hal Friedman – It was not what I expected. I thought that this would be from the family’s perspective. It was from the perspective of the son, who suffers from Tourette’s, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and anxiety disorders. It was a quick read, and I’m glad I read it. It’s kind of like watching “Hotel Rwanda”. No one ever says that it’s their favorite movie, but you feel like you have a better understanding of other human beings’ sufferings.
I love to read, but I can’t afford to buy books very often. Instead, I utilize the library and borrow books from friends. When I do buy books, it’s usually from Half Price books. The thing is, I can’t justify buying a book unless I know I’ll love it. Probably 90% of the books I read are one time reads for me anyway. Why would I want to own a book I’m only going to read once?
E-readers do not interest me. I like holding a book in my hands and turning the pages. What about you? Do you want a Kindle for Christmas? Read any good books lately?

Very interesting Ashley. Mike and a few of the people at his office share their books. One of the guys has a bookself in his office and people borrow and drop off new books all the time. Think this works and wanted to share.
I love having a book in my hands also, but… I just downloaded kindle to my touch and OMGoodness! I have books at the ready! I love it! Just downloaded Upton Sinclairs The Jungle and I’m going to download Knit Two tomorrow!!!
Hey there I’m visiting from sits. I totally get wanting to hold a book. My hubby keeps trying to push e-reading on my but I just can’t go there!
I’m reading The Lacuna, by Barbara Kingsolver. It’s involved, but so well-written. If you haven’t read her Poisonwood Bible, you should give that a whirl, too. Listen, I wanted to thank you soooooooo much for stopping by on my Special SITS Day. It’s taken me a while to get back, but I hope to see you around the blogosphere again soon!
Have you read “The Time Travelers Wife” by Audrey Nifenegger? One of my very favorite books.
I too like to hold the books in my hand. I think the library is a great option. I went through a stage of buying books and it got so expensive!
Visiting from SITS!
