Book Review: Isaac Newton by Mitch Stokes
8 Apr
Isaac Newton by Mitch Stokes is a biography in the Christian Encounters series from Thomas Nelson Publishers. This book goes over an interesting beginning of Isaac Newton’s life, and how God providentially allowed him an advanced education. Isaac Newton was an incredible scientist. He studied and published works on mathematics, optics, alchemy, and theology.
I read mostly fiction, and math was my absolute worst subject in school, so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It was interesting to read about how integral Sir Newton’s faith was to his life and work. My husband and I had a good discussion on consubstantiation after reading about Newton’s difficulty with the doctrine of the Trinity.
There is of course a good deal of science discussed as some of Sir Isaac’s theories are explained. At times it seemed like a book I would have been required to read in school. Mr. Stokes did reveal that Sir Newton had quite a temper, and he craved solitude so that he could focus on his work. Mr. Stokes did a very nice job of debunking some modern myths about Newton. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in science or history.
