Gift Ideas

What is up with gift ideas in magazines? I always think they have such great ideas, and then the recipient thinks, “What the heck was she thinking?” Does anyone else have this problem?

I bought David a hat that Real Simple suggested years ago. It was one of those old fashioned, plaid aviator hats with fleece ear flaps. This was back when Abercrombie and Fitch was cool.

The description in the magazine read, “When you see a guy wearing this, you know he’s got his head on straight and he knows how to chop wood.” That was so David!

He never wore the hat.

The next year, a magazine suggested a hand held video game that was a reproduction of a classic game. “How perfect! David loves video games!” He hated it and returned it immediately. Apparently, classic games aren’t his thing. He wants the latest and greatest.

It’s not just David. Good Housekeeping suggested some body powder from Pier One last year. I gave it to a female relative, and recently I saw it in her garage sale.

Relative, if you’re reading this, don’t be upset. I just laughed when I saw it and decided I’d never use a magazine gift suggestion again.

Hi-LAR-ious. I’m sure many a gift has seen the ol garage sale table. I’m allergic to anything that’s scented, except like fruit scents. So when people who don’t know me so well get me all this high-falutin smelly stuff, well, I can’t use it. Usually I re-gift though! (Which is perfectly appropriate by all etiquette standards as long as the person you’re giving it to knows you’re re-gifting.)

I usually go online and google whatever I need the gift for. I recently found an amazing 50th anniversary gift for my parents.

The problem I ususally have with magazine suggestions is that they’re mucho dinero…very expensive! I think MY husband would have worn the hat…he’s very…Davy Crockett.

Oh, yes, I totally believe in regifting! And you’re right. Magazines do give plenty of expensive gift ideas. Some of the most expensive knick knacks out there will be on the gift idea lists. Knick knacks? Even I know that no one wants to dust them!
