Embrace the Diet Coke
28 Apr
My parents did not let me drink Diet Coke when I was a child. I had tasted Diet Pepsi when they would drink it, but I was a Dr. Pepper girl growing up.
The first time I had Diet Coke was at Girl Scout Camp. The cantina where we went every afternoon after swimming had Mr. Pibb. At nine, I’d never heard of it, and didn’t realize how much like Dr. Pepper it tasted. It was very hot. So I got a Diet Coke. Every day for five days. And the Diet Coke tasted sooo good.
Still, I rarely had it after that until probably tenth grade. And, just so you know, I really had cut back to one a day until the weekend from H***. That weekend, there’s no telling how much Diet Coke I consumed. That was when I decided to embrace the Diet Coke.
Oh, and please don’t try to tell me it’s going to give me cancer. Because the only people who ever chew me out about it are fat and/or they don’t eat right. I’m going to live long enough to see them die of heart disease.
I figure I can enjoy Diet Coke all I want. I don’t drink or smoke. I’ve never done drugs. I eat lots of fruits and vegetables and exercise. See, I can justify anything. Don’t let me go shopping with you.
Plus, my parents have been drinking massive quantities of Diet Pepsi since I was a child, and they’re extremely healthy, so I figure I’m safe.
Momma, Daddy, please tell me you don’t have cancer.

Hi Ash,
I really admire your spirit and your commitment to your marriage. In totally different ways, we have many of the same problems…. if that makes any sense? With Matt’s schedule all the household duties fall on me, and when he is here he is too tired to help. Although I must say, I never really cared for diet coke…. I embrace the cupcake!!!!
Love ya!
Rachael
Thank you! Yes, and I’ve often thought it’s a good thing we don’t have kids. I don’t know how we’d survive. Embrace the cupcake! I love it. Mom definitely embraces the chocolate. I’ve seen her give the boys money and tell them to go get Hershey’s Kisses when she’s stressed!
You know Ashley’s a saint when her greatest vice is Diet Coke consumption.
I was an avid Cherry Coke consumer, like 6-12 cans or a 2-liter or so a day. In order to attempt to stall the weight gain, I switched to Diet Coke. It ain’t that bad actually and I’ve been happy with it for years, though I don’t mind a Route 44 Cherry Coke from Sonic on occasion.
Ooo! Sonic drinks! Now you’re speaking my language. The Sonic by the office where I used to work would give me 99 cent Rt. 44s every day. It gave me an excuse to get out of the office even though I packed my lunch.
My husband was completely addicted to Diet Coke. for years he drank almost a half a case a day. He went cold turkey a year ago, but had one the other day. It was so weird to see one in his hand again!
Oh girl, you just drink those diet Cokes and don’t let anybody tell you different!! I happen to love it too.
Course, since I have a southern food blog, well…
but I still plan to live to be 100!
My brother in law drinks massive amounts of diet coke. Like cases a week. He usually downs a whole can at once! I’ve always had a hard time with diet sodas, but I’m not really a soda drinker at all. We all have to have one vice, right?
Happy SITS day to you!
As a self-proclaimed Diet Coke addict I tip my can to you. It is truly the bomb!
I, too, love Diet Coke. But, I will admit that my new love is Coke Zero. I seriously am addicted. I drive to the local gas station to get it from the fountain a few times a week for a fix.
If you’re a diet drinker you either love diet coke or hate it and vice versa with diet pepsi. I can go through a 2 lt of diet pepsi in half a day easily. My husband yells at me all the time, but he’s the healthy one drinking water all day. Blech. LOL
