Why I Don’t Pass Out Candy to Trick or Treaters (It’s Not What You Think)

2 Sep

It’s a bit early to be talking about Halloween, but so many stores and websites are gearing up for Halloween, so this has been on my mind.

The first year we lived in our house, I was excited to get to pass out candy to Trick or Treaters. I thought it was going to be fun to see all the little kids dressed up. That year our church didn’t have it’s usual Reformation Celebration, so Halloween wasn’t too busy.

It was fun for awhile. We got a pretty good amount of kids, and most of them were with their parents. As it got darker, the time between knocks on the door increased. About nine o’clock, several boys in their early teens came to the door. Our front door had a glass panel, so it was easy to see who was there. I opened the door, and a young man pointed a gun at me and pulled the trigger.

It was a just a toy gun, but it was still unsettling. I’ll be very honest here. I own a handgun. What if I’d had it on my person? What if I’d been quick on the draw? What if I’d been a marine or special ops?

I sort of threw candy in the boys’ buckets, and as I shut and locked the door, the kid apologized. They hadn’t even made it to the end of our sidewalk before I’d turned off the porch light.

That is why I don’t pass out candy to trick or treaters. Sorry kids. Some teenager ruined it for the rest of you.

How horrible!!! He should come over here and try that at my neighbors house! (A Garland Police Officer moved in recently.) (OR, too bad Henry or David didn’t answer the door!)

I too really enjoy going to the Reformation Celebration at Providence Church in Richardson, Texas! I think that it is a really great activity for the kiddos!

Oh My goodness that is awful!! My heart actually sunk when I read that sentence!! I totally get why you don’t pass out candy! After that experience, neither would I!!

You’re nicer than I am. I would have asked in my most calm tone why on earth he thought that would be appropriate, doing my best to embarrass him in front of his buddies. As a consequence of his actions I wouldn’t have given him any candy. I then would have proceeded to give all the other children who behaved candy and politely told the offender that unless he offered up the most sincere apology he would not be welcome to come back next Halloween.

That may be over the top, but my knee jerk reaction would have been to grab him, bend him over my knee and give him a spanking, so I think the former is the better option of the two.

That is shocking and horrible!! I agree with Maegan! I’d probably give the lecture and want to give the spanking. :)

Just reading that freaked me out… I cant imagine being on your end… I dont blame you for not handing out candy now… in today’s crazy world, there are just things you dont do… playing with guns, real or fake, is one of them…

You should live where I do – out in the country, we get NOOOOOO kids- not one trick or treater…unless a deer taps on your door wanting some corn :)

I can’t believe you gave them candy. I would have given them the scolding of their lives!

Oh my gosh you poor thing! Wow! Teenagers.. I have them but wow if mine ever pulled something like that. I wish you would have been a police officer because they needed to be talked to about all the reasons NOT to do that.

Yep, you are nicer than me.. He would not have received any candy and instead would have gotten an earful of why he is lucky I don’t call the police and turn him in for his little prank. He pulls it on the wrong person and wow…..hard to even think.

You know…..sometimes…….I think teenagers just do not think about their actions….

    So sorry ((((HUGS))))

If I’d been thinking clearly, I probably would have called their parents or the police. I was just so rattled! Thanks for all the kind comments!
