Redneck Woman/Netflix
10 Nov
First of all, let me just say, I am related to my redneck brother. I have had lots of flies in my kitchen for the last few days. My usual trick with the apple cider vinegar didn’t work nor did the stick fly traps. A few times I handed the fly swatter to my husband and told him, “Pretend it’s a video game.”
They just kept getting worse. We take out the trash every night, I make sure all the dishes are done before bed and I wipe down the counters. There didn’t seem to be anything in the pantry they were into, so I’m guessing they came in when I had the back door open letting some cool night air in. I really didn’t want to use a fogger or bug bomb, but I was getting desperate.
Tonight I finally said, “Do you think we should buy a bug zapper?” David thought this was a great idea, and went to Lowe’s immediately. Yes, I have a bug zapper on the table in my kitchen. Right this very minute I can hear those pesky flies dying. I am a redneck woman.
Anyway, on to something a little less gross. David and I subscribe to Netflix, and we are so happy with it. We don’t even have cable any more. But it cracks me up when they recommend movie categories they think we’ll like.
After we rated a bunch of movies, Netflix recommended we watch these “Sentimental” movies: (Did you know Sentimental is a movie category. Yup. Right there between Romantic Comedy and Drama.) College Road Trip, The Karate Kid, Short Circuit, Free Willy, Cocoon, and The Shawshank Redemption. Quite a wide range of movies for a “Sentimental” category.
Based on our interest in Amazing Grace and A Beautiful Mind, Netflix suggests the following “Inspiring Dramas based on real life”: Taking Chance, Glory Road, The Freedom Writers, Amistad, Hidalgo, Ali, Bobby, Pride, Antwone Fisher, Roots, Seabiscuit, Eight Below, The Nativity Story and North Country. Phew!
There are also rows of recommendations for “Visually Striking Feel Good Comedies”, “Emotional Underdog Dramas”, “Dramas with a Strong Female Lead” (as opposed to a weak female lead?) and “Heartfelt Action and Adventure”. That’s right. In a “Heartfelt Action and Adventure” movie, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone discuss how their characters are like brothers and how they should call their fathers while they kill bad guys.
P.S. Netflix hasn’t compensated me in any way for this post. In fact, I compensate them every month!

Brilliant idea on the bug zapper! We had about a 10 day stint where they just took over the kitchen and we could kill like 20 at a time. It was the pits and the fly paper from the ceiling had minimal effect.
I may have to rent your bug zapper the next time they come by my house.
Sentimental category??? That’s a new one for me. Whatever happened to the Chick Flick section?
That’s too funny. We used to subscribe to Netflix, and those categories always used to crack me up! Thanks for stopping by to visit me today, and thanks for the tips on how to let guests help (without letting them get in my kitchen and make a mess!).
All I can say is that your post makes me want to go to the movies… just to enjoy the pleasure of a mindless 2 hours of nothingness!!! Thanks!!!
