No Flu Today

17 Oct

David doesn’t have the flu. The doctor specifically said, “This doesn’t mean you’re immune from the flu for the rest of the season. You just don’t have the flu today.” We thought that was really funny.

The doctor gave him a script for anti-biotics in case he gets worse. So far he hasn’t had fever, and he hasn’t given it to me. He’s sleeping a lot and eating almost nothing. We’ll see how he is on Sunday. The doctor said to call the rheumatologist on Monday and ask if David should skip his Humira injection on Thursday.

On a much lighter note, check out these funny t-shirts!

I want to get this one for David.

Snap, crackle, pop.

And I want to buy this one for a certain special sister-in-law who also happens to be a well spouse.

Ok, I don’t mean to be one of THOSE people, but why the antibiotics? Does he have an infection? The flu (or a cold) is viral, not bacterial. Antibiotics won’t do anything for it. Google over prescribing antibiotics just to see what you come up with. And now I’ll hop off my soap box. Just wanted to make you aware in case you weren’t.

From what I understand the antibiotics are for any infection that could start – with immune suppression you have to be prepared to combat an infection immediately. Antibiotics don’t work on viral infections but people with suppressed immune systems have to be super vigilant about secondary bacterial infections. Antibiotics are often overprescribed in the ‘general population’ but patients with suppressed immune systems have to combat an infection immediately. I think your doctor was wise to give you a script in case you need it. I’m really new to all this but have realized how serious a simple cold or flu can be to someone whose immune systmem has been suppressed.

Sorry guys, I wasn’t very clear about the anti-biotics. He told him not to fill the script unless he started getting worse. The doctor thought it was a virus, but he’d only had a sore throat and body aches for a few hours. He didn’t want us to have to come in again Monday or go to after care this weekend. David hasn’t filled the script yet, and hopefully he won’t have to.
