Book Reviews

22 Jan

Here are some reviews of books I’ve recently read.

At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks – It was okay. Probably my least favorite Nicholas Sparks novel.

Dear John by Nicholas Sparks – Good story, but I was disappointed that the “Christian” heroine wasn’t the one doing the right thing.

To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf – This was an audiobook I borrowed from the library. It was nice listening to it while I was stuck in traffic on my way to my part time secretary job. I really enjoyed the vocabulary and what some people nowadays call “wordiness”.

Bed of Roses by Nora Roberts – I listened to this audio book for an hour and couldn’t take it any more. It was boring. Nothing grabbed me. At all. The main character appeared to have absolutely no problems in her life. I just couldn’t relate to her.

Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater – Shiver is a young adult novel about werewolves. The first two thirds of the book were so slow. And what is up with parents in these books? What teenage girl can hide a boy in her room for days without her parents noticing?

As a special bonus, let me recommend a movie: “To End All Wars”. It’s definitely not a movie for children, but the message of “Love thine enemies” is so incredible!

What are you reading?

Thank you for your post. I think I have almost picked up a couple Nicholas Sparks books before. I did see the movies “Message in a Bottle” and “The Notebook”. Maybe I’ll have to look into his stuff. :)

I have read most (if not all) of Nicholas Sparks’ books and I like them.

I just finished Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. Very thought-provoking.

I am now in the middle of The Shack….while I think it has some questionable theology, it is thought-provoking as well. Plus, I like to read things I don’t always agree with (especially super popular books) as it seems to come up in conversations a lot and gives you a common thread with others.

I also just finished reading the Courtship of Nellie Fisher series by Beverly Lewis. These were the first of her books that I had read (and the first Amish-type genre that I have read) and I enjoyed them. They aren’t deep reading, but that kind of mindless, no effort reading.
